Wuhan-Guangzhou high-speed railway, as a passenger railway, will improve the traffic conditions and enhance communication and connection among the cities along the railway line. The paper analyzes the effects of Wuhan-Guangzhou high-speed railway on urban system development separately from the hierarchical structure, spatial structure and function structure. From the analysis, it comes to the conclusion that the construction of Wuhan-Guangzhou high-speed railway will optimize the hierarchical structure of urban system, improve the spatial accessibility among the cities and make the functions and characteristics of cities be more obvious through strengthening industry development. Therefore, the construction of Wuhan-Guangzhou high-speed railway has the important meaning to urban system development. Copyright ASCE 2009.
