Wuhan-Guangzhou high-speed railway, as a passenger railway, will improve the traffic conditions and enhance communication and connection among the cities along the railway line. The paper analyzes the effects of Wuhan-Guangzhou high-speed railway on urban system development separately from the hierarchical structure, spatial structure and function structure. From the analysis, it comes to the conclusion that the construction of Wuhan-Guangzhou high-speed railway will optimize the hierarchical structure of urban system, improve the spatial accessibility among the cities and make the functions and characteristics of cities be more obvious through strengthening industry development. Therefore, the construction of Wuhan-Guangzhou high-speed railway has the important meaning to urban system development. Copyright ASCE 2009.

Fractal calligraphy;Sierpinski's gasket;Pythagorean tree
Rooted in ancient Chinese binary and ternary cosmological ideas, through the generation of infinite, congruent brushstrokes and characters, Chinese calligraphy is fractal. Starting from Sierpinski's gasket, this paper explains and demonstrates fractal calligraphy by applying the algorithms behind this triangular fractal, the Pythagorean tree, the binary decomposition, and the Mandelbrot and Julia sets, etc., to calligraphy. This paper also discusses the connections among the Fuxi Sixty-four Hexagram Diagram, selected trigrams, tetragrams, hexagrams, and the Cantorian triadic bar. These connections reveal that Shao Yong's (1011-1077) insightful hexagram interpretations as well as Laozi's triadic cosmology both reflect the spirit of fractals.
